Jan Karol Chodkiewicz (1560-1621) was a renowned Hetman, strategist and organiser.
Although he receives only a fleeting mention in The Cavalier Club, when reference to the Battle of Kircholm is made during a reminiscing discussion at the dining table at the Channing Estate, his quote here before the battle is undeniably impressive, and is translated to mean "We'll count them after we beat them."
He was born to a Lithuanian father and a Polish mother - birthplace is uncertain - and became an influential nobleman and military commander in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
He led Commonwealth forces in the Wallachian campaign (1599-1600), the Polish-Swedish war (1600-1611), the Polish-Muscovite war (1605-1618) and the Polish-Ottoman war (1620-1621).
Kircholm was his most prized victory, where he defeated the Swedish force, three times the size of his own.
